Eureka was founded in the early 1880s and was originally known as Deweyville. The town was one of the last areas to be developed in Montana in frontier times, and logging was a major draw and source of income for decades. Eureka was once known as the "Christmas Tree Capital of the World" with evergreens shipped to many urban points for holiday sales.

The Canadian fur-trapper and explorer David Thompson visited the area in the early 19th century during his searches for a route to the Pacific Ocean. Early explorers, finding Indians growing a native strain of tobacco, named it the Tobacco Plains. The town pays homage to Thompson's visit each year with its "Tobacco Valley Rendezvous" in April.

President Harry S. Truman gave a speech in Eureka on October 1, 1952, as part of a whistle-stop tour in support of Adlai Stevenson's ultimately unsuccessful presidential campaign. Eureka is also home to Lincoln County High School and the Lincoln County Fair, held each August.

Famous residents of Eureka include actor John McIntire and his wife, actress Jeanette Nolan, and their son, actor-musician Tim McIntire, who are all interred at the Tobacco Valley Cemetery in Eureka.

Eureka is home to two listings on the National Register of Historic Places: the Eureka Community Hall and the Farmers and Merchants State Bank.

A Warm Microclimate
Eureka experiences a mild microclimate, notably warmer than nearby cities such as Kalispell, Whitefish, Montana, as well as Invermere, and Fernie, British Columbia. Summer afternoons are hot and sunny with low humidity while winters are often cloudy but lack the extreme temperatures found nearby.

In conclusion, Eureka, Montana is a quaint town that showcases a rich history and offers a warm and inviting microclimate. With its two historic listings on the National Register and a legacy dating back to the early 19th century, Eureka is a gem waiting to be discovered.
